From Kempsey to the City: Contemporary Mission Art;
Milton Budge with Anthony Flanders and Dorsey Smith

Picture
Boomalli was honoured to exhibit Milton Budge with Anthony Flanders and Dorsey Smith

12th May – 20th June 2011 at Boomalli : 55 – 59 Flood St Leichhardt, Sydney

Never a Truer Story Told

“I sit long enough with the canvas to work out the image in my head and then I colour it in…I work in long committed hours…”  Uncle Milton Budge

“ONE RIVER, ONE MOB, 3 VERY DIFFERENT STYLES”

Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Co-operative is honoured to present respected artist Milton Budge accompanied by his nephew Anthony Flanders and Dorsey Smith in a survey exhibition from the 12th of May until the 20th of April 2011 at 55-59 Flood St, Leichhardt NSW.

Documenting real-life experiences, the exhibition will revisit old haunts and re-engage its audience with mid North Coast Aboriginal art through three very unique perspectives; one mob, one river, three very different styles.

With this show Milton Budge has come full circle, having first ever exhibited with Boomalli in our 1989 group show “Kempsey Koori Artists”. Since then Budge has exhibited alongside artists like Jeffrey Samuels; received accolades such as the 6th Annual Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award and the 2007 Parliament of NSW Indigenous Art Prize; and has pieces in collections such as the Australian National Maritime Museum.

Anthony Flanders is an emerging artist exhibiting alongside his uncle for the first time. His intricate and vibrant work documents stories past and present.

Also related to Budge, Dorsey Smith has been an active contributor to the NSW Indigenous arts scene since 1985 and has been a valuable asset to a number of Boomalli exhibitions in years passed. Smith also had works in the Nuragilli Aboriginal Education Unit at UNSW, the NSW Department of Education as well as Tracey Moffatt’s private collection.

"Black or White it Just Ain't Right" 2010

Picture
Boomalli Aboriginal Artist Co‐operative staged a Gala Event and Artist Expo in support of the ongoing artistic programming at our home gallery and challenge the imminent closure of this, our longest running Aboriginal Artists' Cooperatives and flagship for self determination over the course of 23 years.

Boomalli Founding members were joined by more recent members and other Non‐Indigenous artists and collectors alike in a show of solidarity for this historic arts organisation. Each are presenting artworks towards an exhibition of a world class standard towards Boomalli's survival.

The artists were from all over Australia and as far as America including Arone Raymond Meeks, Adam Hill, Clinton Cross, Euphemia Bostock, Bronwyn Bancroft, Clint Lingard, Jeffrey Samuels, Gordon Syron, Elaine Syron, Gordon Hookey, Jenny Fraser, Tracey Benson, Geoffrey Ferguson, Dan Taulapapa McMullin, Francis Belle Parker, Juno Gemes, Chantal Fraser and many more.

The collective and event organisers also invited artlovers to experience a two day event of talks by leading Aboriginal Artists, Curators and thinkers, including James Wilson Miller from the Powerhouse Museum, Lynn Riley from Sydney University, Lola Forester, Boomalli founding members Bronwyn Bancroft, Euphemia Bostock and Jeffrey Samuels and others.

The title for this showcase was 'BLACK OR WHITE IT JUST AIN"T RIGHT' and Boomalli's official comment was:

"With the intervention raging like a wild bushfire and degrading the last embers of hope, it is TIME to stand up and be counted. It is TIME to stand as Brother and Sister, Aunt and Uncle, as a united community of people who care about saving history and not letting it get wiped off the Australian history slate like so much of our history.

We as a community have to get up and fight for Boomalli.

Artists and lovers of Indigenous NSW art need to show their support. There is still very little funding to be found for NSW art unless we instigate it. We are forever being overlooked by state and federal government art organisations overseen now by many Indigenous decision makers. We have individual artistic talent in New South Wales with many artists having their work exhibited in cultural institutions throughout this state, nationally and overseas. It’s the only way for NSW artistic self determination to succeed because no one else is going to do it for us."

When: Saturday 1st & Sunday 2nd May 2010, 1pm to 3pm

18th March – 4th April, 2009

The Italian Community in Australia has provided a rich and diverse influence in many areas of Australian Culture – not the least of which is the Visual arts.  This exhibition is instigated by  Aboriginal Artist and Boomalli member Joe Hurst and three artists from the Italian Australian community.

The artists have developed a close professional relationship and curated the exhibition on their own terms.  This exhibition brings together 4 mediums: sculpture, photography, painting and installation.

These four artists will transform the gallery space unto a dialogue between Aboriginal and Italian artists.  Support for this project has already been raised through sponsors such as Peroni and the individual promotion of the event by the artists themselves.  Artists were available for interviews and publicity from Monday 2nd March.

Artists:

Joe Hurst and three artists from the Italian Australian community; Gino Nalini, Armando Favrin and Franco Petrolo.

February - Still Black

A visual statement by Indigenous and non Indigenous artists of various sexual textures, exploring the concepts of categorising, profiling and identifying.

It is irreverent, confronting, camp and funky and flies in the face of stereotypes.

We get analysed, categorised, prodded and poked.
It is about accepting the various aspects of our person whilst refusing to be kept in one little box.

The opening celebration - 20th February 6pm

Curated by Darrell Sibosado and Steve Miller

Artists include Jeffrey Samuels, Arone Meeks, Dabid Ian, Jenny Fraser, Adam Hill, Nicole Renee Phillips, Shaun Edwards, Daniel Wallace and many more.

2008 Exhibitions

Picture
February -  'Hand in Hand'
The first exhibition of its kind, ‘Hand in Hand’ featured Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, Maori, Samoan, Niuean and Fijian Artists based in Oz, Aotearoa & USA. This years annual Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Co‐operative’s Sydney Mardi Gras exhibition was an opportunity for Indigenous artists across the Pacific to participate in a celebration of international standing through a program that openly challenged dominant views on sexuality.

The exhibition was also held in collaboration with the Performance Space @ CarriageWorks and ACON in Australia.

The artwork featured focused on non‐conventional media including: the moving image, installation and also inter‐disciplinary media including performance art, music and adornment. The artists: Jeffery Samuels, Tracey Moffatt, Arone Raymond Meeks, Gary Lee, r e a, Darrell Sibosado, Clinton Nain, Adrian Wills, Dianne Jones, Moana Nepia, Niwhai Tupaea, Sionelagi Falemaka, Dan Taulapapa McMullin, Claudine Sartain, Salote Tawale & artist / curator: Jenny Fraser (Oz) & invited guest artist / curator Shigeyuki Kihara (NZ).

The 2D artworks for Hand in Hand were featured at Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Cooperative in Leichardt, and as a gesture of respect to the screen based artists a designated screening room was built especially for this show. Boomalli was established in the 80s and this is the first time they have had a screening room which was a great attempt to honour the moving image works by half of the artists. The screen based component was also installed as the special feature at the Performance Space at Carriageworks in Eveleigh. Bay 19 is a large warehouse style room and large walls were built to screen individual works. Additional 2 dimensional works were also hung on one large wall and lit. Because the room and floor was painted black this meant that so all the works were coming out of the black, shining.

events:

- Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Co operative:
Opening reception 8th Feb 2008
Closing reception: 28th Feb 08 / 6pm – 9pm
Exhibition duration 8th Feb until 4th March 08

The opening program at Boomalli and the Performance Space, and the closing at Boomalli were all very well supported with a family feeling predominant. This doesn’t just refer to the general goodwill between the artists, but the fact that the show drew many families (even Preists!) as new audiences members. This made it an exciting vibe. The closing event also featured a lamb on the spit for a truly cultural feel.

- Performance Space:
‘Hand Over’ performance night: 15th Feb 2008
Exhibition duration 16th Feb til 15th March 2008

The installation of the exhibition and opening celebration at Boomalli was covered comprehensively by Takataapui for Maori TV. This includes indepth interviews with artists and is a testament to innovation and good feeling developed between Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Nations.
